Educational Leadership EdD Admissions

Application Deadline

  • Applications for Fall semester admission are due April 1st.
  • Cohorts will be accepted each year for Fall semester only.

Program Requirements

  • Earned baccalaureate degree and master's degree from accredited institutions of higher education with a cumulative grade point average in graduate study of 3.0 or above;

  • Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores on the three sections of the General Test; GRE scores from the previous five (5) years are acceptable as valid for this purpose;

  • Demonstrated competence in writing as determined by the Ed.D. Program and Graduate Studies at SF State (applicants must score a 4.0 or above on the analytical writing portion of the GRE), and conditional admission may be offered to applicants with lower GRE writing scores;

  • Non-native speakers of English must have a minimum score of 590 on the written, 243 on computer-based or internet-based test, 96 on the computer TOEFL or 7.0 on the IELTS;

  • Demonstrated educational leadership potential and skills including successful experience in school, postsecondary, community, and/or policy leadership;

  • Demonstrated academic excellence, problem-solving ability, technology proficiency, and interest in critically assessing and bringing about improvements to current educational policies and practices.

How to Apply

Step 1: Application to Division of Graduate Studies 

You must first apply to the university through the Division of Graduate Studies. If you are a US resident follow the Domestic Students procedure. If you are a non-US resident follow the International Students procedure.

1. Apply to graduate study through SF State's online application system.

  • The Office of Graduate Admissions no longer accepts paper applications to graduate programs.

  • The application fee is 55.00 USD and we recommend that you pay online by credit card at the moment you submit your application.

  • You will be asked to choose between the Ed.D. with a concentration in P-12 education or the Ed.D. with a concentration in Community College education for your academic major:

    • 501541 - Ed.D with a P-12 concentration

    • 501542 - Ed.D. with a Community College concentration

 

2. Send the Division of Graduate Studies the following:

  • Official academic documents from every college or university ever attended.
  • $55.00 application fee by check or money order if you did not pay online by credit card. Please make check or money order payable to San Francisco State University.

Step 2: Application to Educational Leadership EdD Program

You must also apply directly to the this program within the Graduate College of Education.

Applicants to this program must submit the following:

  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) results (current within the last 5 years)

    • Official scores can be submitted at the test center by selecting Institution Code 4684

    • Official scores may be faxed to the program, (415) 338-7091 or mailed to the Ed.D. program office along with your other application materials listed below.

  • Form A: Personal Statement--This must be typed (1,000-word limit)

  • Form B: Letter of Recommendation--You must submit three (3) letters of recommendation from employers or other individuals who can attest to your suitability for the program. Each letter must be accompanied by a signed Form B and placed in a sealed envelope with the recommeder's signature across the flap.

  • Curriculum vitae or resume

  • Electronic copy of your Personal Statement and CV/resume emailed to the Ed.D. Admissions Office at edd@sfsu.edu

Upon admission to the program applicants must complete the following:
  • Form C: Support Letter from Employer--this is only required once you have been admitted to the program and should be sent directly to the Ed.D. Admissions Office at the above address.

Step 3: Confirm Admission Status

After submitting your applications you can confirm your admission status on your SF State Gateway account.
