Elementary Education MA Admissions

**Please note that this program is a continuation of the SFSU Multiple Subjects Credential Program.  It is only available to SFSU MSC program graduates within three years of completion.  Graduates more than three years past completion may contact the program coordinator about possible exceptions.


Application Deadline

  • For Fall Admissions, May 31st (If weekend then the next business day).
  • For Spring Admissions, November 1st (If weekend then the next business day).

Program Requirements

  • Successful completion of the SFSU Multiple Subjects Credential Program (current students may apply in the final semester of their MSC program)
  • Possession of B.A. with 3.0 minimum GPA for the last 60 units
  • Recommendations from a faculty member who taught the applicant an academic course in the SFSU credential program and a student teaching supervisor or Master Teacher
  • Writing sample that shows ability to engage in academic writing at the MA level

University Application

  • Online Graduate Application
  • Application fee $55.00 (this is waived for current students; please contact Elementary Education Office for procedures)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended (current students do not need to re-submit transcripts)

Program Application

  • Department application form
  • Statement of purpose (current students may substitute a paper completed as part of the MSC program that shows academic writing at the MA level)
  • Two letters of recommendation (one from a member of the SFSU MSC program faculty and one from a master teacher, student teaching supervisor, or supervisor in a teaching setting)
  • Resume or CV

How to Apply


Step 1: Application to Division of Graduate Studies

You must first apply to the university through the Division of Graduate Studies. If you are a US resident follow the Domestic Students procedure. If you are a non-US resident follow the International Students procedure.

Domestic Student Admission:

1. Apply to graduate study through Cal State Apply, SF State's online application system (this will link you to Cal State Apply). The Office of Graduate Admissions no longer accepts paper applications.The application fee is 55.00 USD and we recommend that you pay online by credit card at the moment you submit your application.

2. Send the Division of Graduate Studies the following:

  • 2 copies of official transcript(s) from every College or University attended
  • $55.00 application fee by check or money order if you did not pay online by credit card. Please make check or money order payable to San Francisco State University

International Student Admission:

  • Official academic documents from every college or university ever attende

Step 2: Application to Elementary Education Department

You must also apply directly to the specific department within the Graduate College of Education for this program.

Applicants to this program must submit the following:

  • A completed EED department application form (You can also pick one up from Burk Hall 179)
  • A clear and well-organized statement of purpose that state the following:
    • Your professional competencies & goals, and your goals for graduate school and the future, as it relates to the Language and Literacy MA program
    • Your level of competency in laguages other than English, if you are bilingual and/or bi literate
  • Two letters of recommendation that include the following topics:
    • Your academic ability to pursue graduate work (from a professor or instructor)
    • Your professional experiences teaching young children or adults (from an administrator or other professional educator)
    • *For the letters of recommendation please address the letters on a letterhead to the Early Childhood Coordinators: Dr. Mina Kim and Dr. Daniel Meier
  • Unofficial transcript(s) from every college or university attended
  • Current and complete resume

Step 3: Confirm Admission Status

After submitting your applications you can confirm your admission status on your SF State Gateway account.
