Instructional Technologies MA Admissions (ELSIT)

Application Deadline

For Fall Admissions, May 1st (If weekend then the next business day).
For Spring Admissions, November 1st (If weekend then the next business day).

Program Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • 3.0 GPA in the last 60 semester units
  • Competency in basic computer skills, such as word processing, presentation, and web browsing

  • $55 application fee

Step 1: Application to Division of Graduate Studies  

You must first apply to the university through the Division of Graduate Studies. If you are a US resident follow the Domestic Students procedure. If you are a non-US resident follow the International Students procedure.

1. Apply to graduate study through SF State's online application system. The Office of Graduate Admissions no longer accepts paper applications. The application fee is 55.00 USD and we recommend that you pay online by credit card at the moment you submit your application.

2. Send the Division of Graduate Studies the following:

  • 2 copies of official transcript(s) from every College or University attended
  • $55.00 application fee by check or money order if you did not pay online by credit card. Please make check or money order payable to San Francisco State University

  • TOEFL or IELTS score report
  • Financial Statement/Medical Insurance Form

Step 2: Application to Program Department

You must also apply directly to the specific department within the Graduate College of Education for this program.

Applicants to this program must submit the following:

  • ELSIT Department Application form
  • Two letters of reference from professors, employers, or other people you have worked with on a professional basis
  • One set of transcripts, copies are acceptable, from all colleges and universities attended including SFSU, both undergraduate and graduate
  • Statement of Purpose outlining the reasons for wanting to pursue a degree and/or credential in the selected program

Additionally, after submitting the above documents, applicants must interview with the program chair.

  • During the interview the program chair will review the applicant’s interest and preparation in the field.
  • This interview may be conducted in person, or via the phone or other electronic means (such as Skype).

Note on computer competency requirements:

  • Applicants must be able to use standard office productivity and web browsing software (word processing, presentation, etc.).*
  • No special multimedia authoring skills are required, though they may be helpful in certain classes and for selected projects.**

*Students who have no background or experience in creating basic multimedia may be asked to complete ITEC 715, Computer Foundations of Instructional Multimedia, with at least a grade of "B". This course may be applied toward the master's degree. 

**Students with no background or practical experience in instructional design may be required to complete ITEC 700, Careers in Instructional Technology, with a minimum grade of "B." This course may be applied toward the master's degree.


Step 3: Confirm Admission Status

After submitting your applications you can confirm your admission status on your SF State Gateway account.
