Language and Literacy MA Admissions (EED)

Program Requirements

  • Possession of an elementary or secondary education teaching credential or 24 units of professional coursework directly relevant to education.
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience.
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a 3.0 minimum GPA for the last 60 units
  • Online Graduate Application
  • Application fee $55.00
  • Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
  • TOEFL or IELTS score report (international students only)
  • Department application form
  • Statement of purpose
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Transcript(s) from every college or university attended
  • Resume or CV
  • 2 copies of official transcript(s) from every College or University attended
  • $55.00 application fee by check or money order if you did not pay online by credit card.
  • Please make check or money order payable to San Francisco State University
  • Official academic documents from every college or university ever attende
  • TOEFL or IELTS score report

Financial Statement/Medical Insurance Form

  • $55.00 application fee by check or money order if you did not pay online by credit card.
  • A completed EED department application form (You can also pick one up from Burk Hall 179)
  • A clear and well-organized statement of purpose that state the following:
  • Your professional competencies & goals, and your goals for graduate school and the future, as it relates to the Language and Literacy MA program
  • Your level of competency in laguages other than English, if you are bilingual and/or bi literate
  • Two letters of recommendation that include the following topics:
  • Your academic ability to pursue graduate work (from a professor or instructor)
  • Your professional experiences teaching young children or adults (from an administrator or other professional educator)

For the letters of recommendation, please address the letters on a letterhead to the Language and Literacy Coordinators: Dr. Marguerite Conrad and Dr. Homayoun Ali Borjian

  • Unofficial transcript(s) from every college or university attended.
  • Current and complete resume.

Step 1: Application to Division of Graduate Studies 

You must first apply to the university through the Division of Graduate Studies. If you are a US resident follow the Domestic Students procedure. If you are a non-US resident follow the International Students procedure.

Domestic Student Admission:

1. Apply to graduate study through Cal State Apply, SF State's online application system (this will link you to Cal State Apply). The Office of Graduate Admissions no longer accepts paper applications.The application fee is 55.00 USD and we recommend that you pay online by credit card at the moment you submit your application.

2. Send the Division of Graduate Studies the following:

International Student Admission:

Step 2: Application to Elementary Education Department

You must also apply directly to the specific department within the Graduate College of Education for this program.
