Mathematics Education MA Admissions (EED)

Application Deadline

For Fall Admissions, May 31st
(If weekend or holiday, then the next business day).

For Spring Admissions, November 1st
(If weekend or holiday,  then the next business day).


Program Requirements

  • Possession of a single subject or multiple subject teaching credential
  • A minimum of two years of teaching teaching mathematics in an elementary or secondary classroom
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA for the last 60 units

Application Requirements

  • Online Graduate Application
  • Application fee $55.00
  • Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
  • TOEFL or IELTS score report (international students only)

  • Two-page statement of purpose
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Transcript(s) from every college or university attended
  • Resume or CV

How to Apply


Step 1: Application to Division of Graduate Studies 

You must first apply to the university through the Division of Graduate Studies. If you are a US resident follow the Domestic Students procedure. If you are a non-US resident follow the International Students procedure.

1. Apply to graduate study through SF State's online application system. The Office of Graduate Admissions no longer accepts paper applications.The application fee is 55.00 USD and we recommend that you pay online by credit card at the moment you submit your application.

2. Send the Division of Graduate Studies the following:

  • 2 copies of official transcript(s) from every College or University attended
  • $55.00 application fee by check or money order if you did not pay online by credit card. Please make check or money order payable to San Francisco State University

Go to Domestic Admissions page of Division of Graduate Studies website

Step 2: Apply to Elementary Education Department

You must also apply directly to the specific department within the Graduate College of Education for this program.

Applicants to this program must submit the following:

  • A completed EED department application form (or you can pick one up from Burk Hall 179)
  • Completed EED Math MA Questionnaire
  • Completed EED Math MA Recommendation Form
  • A clear and well-organized statement of purpose that state the following:
    • Your professional competencies and goals, and your goals for graduate school and the future, as it relates to the Mathematics Education MA program
    • Your level of competency in written English
  • Two letters of recommendation that include the following topics:
    • Your academic ability to pursue graduate work (from a professor or instructor)
    • Your professional experiences teaching young children or adults (from an administrator or other professional educator)
  • Address the letters on a letterhead to the Mathematics Education coordinators: Dr. Maria Zavala (Elementary Ed.) OR Dr. Judith Kysh (Secondary Ed.)
  • Unofficial transcript(s) from every college or university attended
  • Current and complete resume
