Application Deadline

Applications are Fall semester admission are due May 1st.
(if the due date is on a holiday or weekend, the form is due on the following business day)

Applications for Spring semester admission are due November 1st.
(if the due date is on a holiday or weekend, the form is due on the following business day)

Program Requirements

  • Possession of ONE of the following teaching credentials:

    • A valid teaching credential that requires a bachelor’s degree and a professional preparation program that includes student teaching, OR

    • A valid, clear, full-time designated subjects teaching credential, provided the holder also possesses a bachelor’s degree and has passed the CBEST.

  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience, preschool through adult. Teaching under an internship credential or an emergency credential DOES NOT meet the requirement.

  • Demonstrated written English proficiency.

  • Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
  • TOEFL or IELTS score report (international students only)

Step 1: Application to Division of Graduate Studies 

You must first apply to the university through the Division of Graduate Studies. If you are a US resident follow the Domestic Students procedure. If you are a non-US resident follow the International Students procedure.

1. Apply to graduate study through SF State's online application system. The Office of Graduate Admissions no longer accepts paper applications to graduate programs.The application fee is 55.00 USD and we recommend that you pay online by credit card at the moment you submit your application.

2. Send the Division of Graduate Studies the following:

  • Official academic documents from every college or university ever attended.
  • $55.00 application fee by check or money order if you did not pay online by credit card. Please make check or money order payable to San Francisco State University.

Send the above documents to:

Step 2: Application to Elementary Education Department

You must also apply directly to the specific department within the Graduate College of Education for this program.

Applicants to this program must submit the following:

  • Completed EED department application form

  • A clear and well-organized statement of purpose that:

    • Describes your current professional competencies & goals, and your goals for graduate school and the future, as it relates to the Language and Literacy MA program

    • Demonstrates written English language proficiency

  • Two letters of recommendation:

    • One from a professor or instructor that describes your academic ability to pursue graduate work

    • One from an administrator or other professional educator that describes your professional experiences teaching young children

    • Address the letters on letterhead to:

      • Dr. Marguerite Conrad and Dr. Homayoun Ali Borjian

  • Unofficial transcript(s) from every college or university attended

  • Current and complete resume or CV
