Coloring in the White Spaces - Dr. Ann Milne Saturday, April 21, 2018 - 12:30pm to 2:00pm

Africana Studies and the EdD in Educational Leadership Invite You to

Coloring in the White Spaces

The New Zealand government’s strategic plan for Māori education has the vision of “Māori students enjoying and achieving education success as Māori. Dr. Milne’s presentation, based on her PhD research and practice developed at Kia Aroha College, asks us to think about what this actually means and how do our institutionalized practices and solutions actually work against this goal? She will describe Kia Aroha College’s practice to support academic and cultural learning to develop “Warrior-Scholars” through a Critical, Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy of Whānau (the Māori concept of extended family relationships). Ann challenges us to find and reflect on the white spaces in our own thinking and practice, and to actively work towards changing them.

Dr. Milne’s keynote will be followed by a Q&A with our guest panel.
