The Department of Elementary Education offers three program options:
Applications Deadlines: Nov. 1 for spring and March 1 for summer and fall enrollment.
The three-semester program allows students to fulfill the MSC preliminary credential requirements across 3 semesters. Students can enter the program in fall or spring semesters. Candidates must do student teach for 12 hours per week for two semesters in elementary classroom, and student teach full-time during their final semester. Student coursework is spread across three semesters, allowing for fewer classes per semester. This option supports working students and students with family responsibilities. One Calendar Year Program
The one -year academic calendar program allows students to fulfill the MSC preliminary credential requirements by enrolling in an intensive summer session, fall and spring semesters. Students must enter the program in in the summer preceding the academic year. This program allows candidates to student teach for 12 hours per week for fall and spring semesters in elementary classrooms. Full-time student teaching takes place during their final semester. Admissions are only in the summer. (27 units)
Bilingual Educators for Social Transformation (BEST-Spanish )
One Calendar Year
The BEST program allows students to fulfill the MSC Preliminary Credential with a Bilingual Authorization. This program requires enrolling in an intensive summer session, fall and spring semesters. Bilingual candidates must enter the program in the summer preceding the academic year. Candidates enroll in sequenced, module-structured courses throughout the program, including a Spanish Heritage Language and Pedagogy course. Student teaching is three full time days per week for the fall and spring semester in Spanish bilingual classrooms. You must be a fluent Spanish speaker and literate. You must enroll in the summer sessions to be part of the program. (30 units)
Three Semester Chinese Bilingual Program
Currently this is a three semester program offering reading and language arts in Chinese. In addition, Chinese bilingual candidates will receive course assignments relevant to teaching bilingual students, field placements in Chinese Bilingual Classrooms. EED facilitates a program plan for students to fulfill the MSC Preliminary Credential with a Bilingual Authorization.
As enrollment increases our aim is to offer a self-contained Chinese Bilingual program where the language of instruction will be primarily in Chinese and bilingually. You must be a fluent Chinese speaker and literate. (27 units)
Intern Program (You must by hired by a school district as the teacher on record, you must meet the requirements and be enrolled in a MSC Program.
The Intern program is a four-semester program and possibly summer courses. All participants must be employed as the teacher of record and meet all internship credential requirements (Passing CSET and CBEST before being hired). All classes for the Intern Program will be held in the evening. Application Pre-Program Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree must be posted before starting the program
- GPA: 2.67 overall or 2.75 in last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units
- Early Field Experience 45 hours in a public classroom setting. You will need a letter of recommendation by the supervising classroom teacher.
- Fulfill Basic Skills Requirement (CBEST)
- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency Requirement (CSET Subtests I, II, & III)
- TB Test
- Certificate of Clearance
- Three Letters of Recommendation (one academic professor, work, school site)
- Statement of Purpose: Inform the review committee why you want to be a teacher, personal and professional experiences that motivated you to pursue this profession.
