The first day of class — an iconic part of the American experience and a critical time for setting the tone for the whole semester. So here are a few suggestions to secondary school teachers for that first class, although elementary teachers may also find some ideas to adopt as well.
There is a typical first-day process that focuses on the course content, usually with a written handout, and perhaps some talk of rules for the class. But I think teachers need to also focus on the socio-emotional environment of the class.
